King Devanampiyatissa, a pivotal figure in Sri Lankan history, embarked on a mission to plant Bodhi trees across the island from Anuradhapura to Kataragama. The Bodhi tree at Udakotuwa Temple is one of these sacred trees. This effort was part of his broader initiative to spread Buddhism throughout the country following his conversion to the faith by the Indian Emperor Ashoka.

One of the most remarkable features of Udakotuwa Temple is its ancient Bodhi tree. Uniquely, one of its branches produces only white leaves, a rarity among Bodhi trees. This phenomenon adds to the tree's mystical aura, drawing pilgrims and visitors alike. Remarkably, this tree survived the widespread vandalism and destruction carried out by the Portuguese during their colonial rule.

After falling into obscurity for hundreds of years, Udakotuwa Temple was rediscovered in 1834. The rediscovery led to the temple's reconstruction, restoring it to its former glory. This event marked a significant revival of the site's religious importance and historical heritage.

The journey to Udakotuwa Temple begins on a circular road, with the temple being the first significant site encountered. A notice board 300 meters down this road directs visitors to the temple, which is situated on a hillock.
