場所と地理

Nestled within the Central Province of Sri Lanka, Pidurutalagala Mountain, known as Mount Pedro in English, commands attention with its imposing presence. The name "Pidurutalagala" translates to "Straw Plateau Rock" in Sinhala, offering a glimpse into the intriguing geography of this natural wonder. Surrounded by a forest reserve, Pidurutalagala Mountain serves as a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna, creating an ecosystem of rich biodiversity.

歴史的背景

During the British regime, Pidurutalagala Mountain held a special place as a must-visit destination. Historical records indicate that as early as 1897, visitors could embark on a two-and-a-half-hour trek or opt for a quicker horseback ride to reach the mountaintop. Interestingly, even sedan chairs were available for the convenience of the distinguished ladies who sought to explore this natural marvel. Sedans, wooden litters borne by strong men, were a standard mode of transportation for highborn ladies in the West, and their presence on the slopes of Pidurutalagala Mountain highlights the mountain's popularity and the diverse visitors it attracted.

動植物

What sets Pidurutalagala Mountain apart is the unique vegetation that adorns its summit. Eyewitness accounts from the 1940s describe a cap of pale green foliage, giving the mountain a distinct appearance. During the dry season, when the vegetation dries to a pale yellow hue, the mountain truly lives up to its name of "Straw Laden Rock." As one ascends the mountain, the forest undergoes a remarkable transformation, with shorter and more gnarled trees, flattened tops, and abundant lichen and moss. These characteristics are reminiscent of cloud forests, making the flora on Pidurutalagala Mountain a fascinating subject of study and admiration.

Geology

The geological history of Sri Lanka reveals three peneplains, with Pidurutalagala Mountain situated on the highest of these plains. Coined by the geographer William Morris Davis, the term "peneplain" refers to landforms that are smoother than mountains yet more irregular than plains. Understanding the geology of Pidurutalagala Mountain offers insights into its formation and composition, adding to the allure of this natural treasure.
