説明
Yapahuwa Ancient Kingdom, located in Sri Lanka’s North Western Province, is a remarkable fortress city that briefly served as the capital of the island during the 13th century. Built by King Buvanekabahu I in 1273, Yapahuwa is most famous for its magnificent stone stairway, adorned with intricate carvings that reflect the brilliance of medieval Sinhalese craftsmanship. Rising steeply from the plains, the fortress was strategically designed on a rock outcrop nearly 90 meters high, providing natural defenses against invasions. At its peak, Yapahuwa housed the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, making it both a political and religious center. Although the relic was later taken by South Indian invaders, the remains of the royal palace, ramparts, and Buddhist shrines still stand as testimony to the kingdom’s grandeur. Today, Yapahuwa is an archaeological treasure that attracts visitors with its blend of history, art, and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
