Makandawa Forest Reserve, located in the lush region of Kitulgala in Sri Lanka, is one of the island’s oldest and most important lowland rainforest reserves. Established mainly for the purpose of conserving the biodiversity of the wet zone, it spans an area of about 1,155 hectares and is a paradise for nature lovers, researchers, and adventure seekers alike. The forest is home to an extraordinary range of flora and fauna, including endemic, rare, and threatened species. Visitors can spot over 50 species of birds, such as the Sri Lanka Orange-billed Babbler, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, and Layard’s Parakeet, alongside mammals, amphibians, and reptiles.
