Surf in Chilaw
Beach Break / Rivermouth
Beginner–Intermediate
Overview: Surfing in Chilaw
Chilaw, located along Sri Lanka’s north-west coast, is a lesser-known surf spot with beach breaks and a rivermouth setup. The area is quiet and uncrowded compared to the south, making it appealing for mellow sessions and fewer crowds. Conditions can be variable, but when the monsoon winds ease, Chilaw delivers fun, rideable waves in a laid-back coastal setting.
With its shallow, sandy bottom and gradual beach breaks, Chilaw is ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers looking for a relaxed vibe. However, more advanced surfers can still find some fun waves when the right swell hits. The area is not overly commercialized, so surfers can enjoy a more authentic, local experience away from the crowded tourist spots.
Surfing & Waves
- Type: Beach break with occasional rivermouth peaks. When the river mouth aligns, it can provide some exciting left and right-handers for intermediate riders.
- Best for: Beginners and intermediates; mellow waves most of the year, ideal for longboards and funboards.
- Swell: Picks up SW and W swells; size is generally smaller than the south coast, making it ideal for smaller surf days.
- Wind: Best with light NE offshore winds in the mornings. Winds from the north can clean up the surf, while southern winds can cause chop.
- Tide: Mid tide works well; low tide can expose rocks and shallow sections, while high tide offers softer rides for beginners.
- Character: Fun, rolling waves ideal for longboarders. On bigger days, the waves can provide punchier rides with occasional bigger peaks.
Chilaw is one of the more relaxed spots on the west coast, so the crowds tend to be lighter, and the vibe is more laid-back. There are also small local surf schools, making it a great place for beginners to get lessons and improve their skills.
Etiquette & Safety
- Currents: Watch for rivermouth rips, especially during bigger swells. Always be cautious of the strong currents around the rivermouth area.
- Bottom: Sandy with some rocks near the river mouth. Be cautious during low tide as rocks can be exposed, making the area tricky to navigate.
- Local etiquette: Be respectful of local fishers and surfers. Avoid the nets placed along the coast and make sure to give space to locals.
- Snaking: Avoid snaking waves or dropping in on someone else’s ride. Share waves and communicate your intentions in the lineup.
- Gear: Leash is essential, and booties are recommended for rocky sections near the rivermouth, especially during low tide.
Getting There & Access
- Chilaw is ~80 km north of Colombo, about a 2–3 hour drive via Negombo.
- Tuk-tuk or scooter is convenient for beach access; the surf spots are close to town, and many local surf schools offer transport options.
- Access to the beach is through small lanes from the main road. It’s easy to miss the entry, so keep an eye out for the local landmarks.
- For those with rental cars, parking is available at the beach but tends to fill up on weekends. Arrive early for the best spots.
Best Time to Surf
The west coast works best from November to April, during the dry season, with optimal wind conditions and clean surf in the mornings. The waves are generally smaller than in the south but still provide plenty of fun.
During the monsoon season (May–October), the area can experience heavier winds and unpredictable conditions, making it less ideal for surfers looking for consistent waves. However, smaller swells and less crowded beaches can be appealing to some.
