The Hotel began as a Dutch villa named Galle Face House that had been a gathering place for gentlemen of the colonial period. That was until four British entrepreneurs chose to use it to start a business, oblivious that, by the belatedly 19th century, it would be known as the most refined Hotel East of Suez.

The Hotel initially opened in 1864, borrowing its name from the charming expanse of ground known as the 加勒菲斯绿地, which stretches for a kilometre by the side of the Hotel, along the beach, where, in Victorian duration, it was a favourite location to take a walk in the ocean ambience or a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.
