描述

Hunugal Pokuna, also known as the Limestone Pond, is a stunning natural wonder nestled within the Rajawaka Forest Reserve, near Kalthota in Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa Province. To reach this tranquil site, visitors must embark on a scenic trek of about 1.5 kilometers through lush forest trails rich with biodiversity. The journey itself is an adventure, offering sightings of endemic flora and a peaceful escape into nature.

Entry into the forest reserve requires prior permission from the Sri Lanka Forest Department, as the area is a protected ecological zone. This ensures the preservation of the unique limestone ecosystem surrounding Hunugal Pokuna. It's considered one of the rarest types of natural limestone ponds in Sri Lanka — and possibly the only one still sustaining its original form.

While swimming or walking in the pond is strictly prohibited to protect its fragile structure, you are welcome to enjoy the natural streams and bathing spots nearby. The calm and crystal-clear waters, surrounded by greenery and limestone formations, make it a perfect place for eco-tourism, nature photography, and mindful relaxation.

Due to its ecological sensitivity and spiritual significance among locals, visitors are encouraged to practice respectful and eco-friendly tourism. Bringing back plastic or other waste is highly discouraged. If you're planning a visit, contact the Forest Department – Balangoda or Kalthota office in advance to arrange your permit and possibly a guide.

Hunugal Pokuna is not just a pond – it's a sacred natural relic and a serene symbol of Sri Lanka’s hidden beauty.
