Dondra Head Lighthouse is a testament to Sri Lanka's rich maritime history. The esteemed Sir James Nicholas Douglass crafted the blueprint of the Dondra Head Lighthouse. Under the supervision of William Douglass from the Imperial Lighthouse Service, its foundation stone was laid in November 1887. Remarkably, all building materials, from the bricks to the steel, were transported from England. Even the granite used was meticulously selected from Dalbeattie, Scotland, and Penryn, Cornwall quarries. By March 1890, the lighthouse greeted its first beam of light, marking the culmination of hard work and international collaboration.
