Spanning over 18 hectares, this lush urban wetland forms part of a larger 1,000-hectare forest sanctuary declared by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1984.

Historically, the Kotte Ramparts served as protective fortifications of the Kotte Kingdom in the 15th century.
