History of Peacock Hill

Peacock Hill holds historical significance, particularly about the life of Prince Gemunu, also known as King Dutugemunu, one of the most renowned kings in Sri Lankan history. The village of Kotagepitiya in Kotmale, situated at the foot of Peacock Hill, played a pivotal role in Prince Gemunu's life. After fleeing due to a disagreement with his father, the prince sought refuge in Kothmale, spending twelve years hiding. It is believed that during this period, he worked as a farmer and herder in the village, often taking his poultry to Peacock Hill.

Although the most direct route is from Mahaweli Seya to Kotmale, the road conditions are not ideal. However, it is still possible to reach the top of the hill by car, with only a short distance of 200 to 300 meters to cover on foot.
