Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, established in 1975, is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife conservation centers.
It was created to care for orphaned, injured, and abandoned elephants and today is home to the largest herd of captive elephants in the world.

Getting There

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located about 40 km from Kandy and 90 km from Colombo.

• By Car: About 2.5 hours from Colombo, 1.5 hours from Kandy.
• By Train: Take the Colombo–Kandy line and get off at Rambukkana Station (2 km from Pinnawala).
• By Bus: Regular buses run from Colombo and Kandy to Pinnawala.
