Anteriormente conocido como el santuario de Chundikulam, en 2015 el gobierno de Sri Lanka vinculó numerosos bosques cercanos para crear una zona protegida más amplia, el Parque Nacional de Chundikulam. El parque cuenta con extensos manglares y praderas marinas. Entre las aves que se pueden observar en el parque se encuentran la aguja colipinta, la cigüeñuela común, la gaviota cabecinegra, el andarríos bastardo, el flamenco común y varias otras. También se pueden observar ciervos y cocodrilos. El informe indica que leopardos y osos viven en el parque nacional de Chundikulam, pero no son fáciles de encontrar debido a su falta de costumbres y a su timidez.
