Overview: Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Orfanato de elefantes de Pinnawala, established in 1975, is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife conservation centers.
It was created to care for orphaned, injured, and abandoned elephants and today is home to the largest herd of captive elephants in the world.
Visitors can watch elephants being fed, see adorable baby elephants, and enjoy the magical sight of herds bathing in the Maha Oya River nearby.
It offers an unforgettable glimpse into conservation and Sri Lanka’s close bond with these gentle giants.

The orphanage is open year-round. The best time to visit is during the **feeding times (9:15 am & 1:15 pm)** and **river bathing sessions (10 am & 2 pm)**.
Morning hours are ideal for cooler weather and more activity.
Cómo llegar
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located about 40 km from Kandy and 90 km from Colombo.
- En coche: About 2.5 hours from Colombo, 1.5 hours from Kandy.
- En tren: Take the Colombo–Kandy line and get off at Rambukkana Station (2 km from Pinnawala).
- En autobús: Regular buses run from Colombo and Kandy to Pinnawala.
