Fort hollandais de Negombo

  • Histoire et culture

Description

Negombo Dutch Fort is located in the City of Negombo. Initially a Portuguese formulation, it was restored by the Dutch after they caught that city. Although the fort now occupies in remains, it has played quite a task in its colonial history.

History of the Negombo Dutch Fort

The Dutch East India Company built the Negombo Dutch Fort in the 17th century during their colonization of Sri Lanka. The fort was strategically built on the west coast of Sri Lanka to protect the city of Negombo from foreign invaders. The fort served as a military stronghold and was also used as a trading post for the Dutch East India Company.

During the British colonial period, the Negombo Dutch Fort was used as a prison, and after Sri Lanka gained independence, it was used as a government office. However, the fort has recently been restored to its former glory and is now a popular tourist attraction.

The architecture of the Negombo Dutch Fort

The Negombo Dutch Fort is a classic example of Dutch colonial architecture, with its characteristic thick walls, bastions, and canals. The fort is built on a pentagonal plan and covers an area of about 50 acres. The fort's walls are coral and limestone, and the gates adorn the Dutch coat of arms.

The fort has three bastions - the Zwart Bastion, the Kruys Bastion, and the Hoogerwerf Bastion. The Hoogerwerf Bastion is the fort's highest point and offers a panoramic view of the city and the sea.
