Conservation History

Established in 1996 by the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP), Rekawa Turtle Watch was created to protect endangered turtles from poaching and habitat destruction. In 2006, Rekawa Beach was declared a wildlife sanctuary. Today, the project is run with strong community involvement so eco-tourism revenue supports conservation work and local livelihoods.

Visiting Rekawa Turtle Watch

Tours usually begin around 8:00 PM at the Visitor Centre. Guides quietly escort small groups to the dark beach to observe turtles laying eggs or returning to the sea. Patience is essential—as sightings depend on natural behaviour—but watching under a starlit sky is unforgettable. Flash photography and bright torches are not allowed.
