📍 Overview

Upper Diyaluma Falls, located near Koslanda in the Badulla District, is the upper section of Diyaluma, Sri Lanka’s second-highest waterfall at 220 meters (720 ft). Unlike the waterfall base, which is more popular with local crowds, the upper part has become a hidden gem for adventurous travelers. It is world-famous for its natural infinity pools carved into the rock, where you can swim at the edge while overlooking breathtaking valleys.

The area surrounding the falls is a paradise of lush greenery, misty hills, and rolling tea plantations. A series of rock pools at different levels create opportunities for swimming, cliff-jumping (in safe areas), and sunbathing on the flat rock surfaces. The most spectacular pool is perched right on the edge of the waterfall, offering dramatic photo opportunities and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Reaching Upper Diyaluma requires a 30–45 minute hike through scenic tea estates, grasslands, and village paths. 🚗 How to Reach

  • From Ella: About 1 hour by tuk-tuk or car (24 km) via Wellawaya–Koslanda road.
  • From Haputale: Around 45 minutes by road.
  • Public Transport: Buses run between Ella, Haputale, and Koslanda. From Koslanda town, tuk-tuks can take you to the Poonagala Road trailhead.
  • Best Route: Tuk-tuk hire from Ella or Haputale is most convenient, as local drivers know the exact drop-off points.

  • Dry Season (January–April, July–September): Safest for swimming and hiking, as the pools are calm.
  • Rainy Season (May–June, October–December): Avoid swimming — water flow can be dangerously strong.
