Overview: Hiriketiya Bay Beach Break
Hiriketiya Bay is a 500 m horseshoe-shaped cove with a left reef and a beach surf break. It is a quiet spot away from the A2 road, just south of Dickwella town. The bay suits beginner to intermediate surfers and is popular with surf families. Around the cove you will find some of the nicest villas on the south coast, plus mid to high-end hotels and guesthouses. Advanced surfers can check the Hiriketiya Bay reef break.
Surfing & Waves
- Reef point (left): peeling left-hander over a shallow reef close to shore; powerful, holds up to about 6 ft and can give rides up to roughly 350 m around the bay.
- Take-off zone: small and can get crowded; works with the right swell but sets can be spaced out.
- Beach break: picks up wrap from the reef; sometimes bigger than expected with fun peaks; can be busy when several surf schools choose the same window.
- Vibe: relaxed bay with cafés along the sand where you can wait out the lulls between sets.
Etiquette & Safety
- Watch the reef at low tide and mind the shallow inside.
- Share the small take-off area; wait your turn and keep clear of learners.
- Leash recommended; reef booties optional depending on tide and comfort.
Comment s'y rendre et se déplacer
- Turn off the A2 south of Dickwella town and follow the local road to the bay.
- Easy access by tuk-tuk or scooter; limited parking near the beach so early mornings help.
Accommodation & Surf Stays
The bay is lined with villas, boutique hotels and guesthouses, plus several surf-ready cafés and schools on the sand. Mid to high-end stays are common, with a few budget rooms in nearby Dickwella.
