Overview: Dondra Surf Point (by the Lighthouse)

Sitting at Sri Lanka’s southern tip near the Dondra Head Lighthouse, this spot is a right-hand reef that turns on with proper groundswell. It’s more exposed and fickle than nearby bays, but when it works you’ll score clean walls with a real ocean feel.

• Typ: Exposed right-hand reef; can be inconsistent but powerful on the right swell.
• Ideal für: Intermediates and up; confident paddling and reef awareness required.
• Quellen: Prefers Südwestliche Bodenwellen; smaller windswell often misses the point.
• Wind: Am besten reinigen mit N–NNW/offshore morning breezes in season.
• Tide: Mid to mid-high often adds water over shallow sections and helps the line.
• Charakter: Steeper take-off into a running wall; sections for cutbacks and carves when lined up.

Etikette & Sicherheit

• Rips & currents: Strong channels around the headland—plan your paddle and keep an exit in mind.
• Unten: Reef/rock; be mindful at low tide. Booties optional, leash essential.
• Keep clear of the jump-in/exit zones and local fishers; call your direction and don’t snake the peak.

Anreise & Zugang

• 6–7 km SE of Matara; follow signs to Leuchtturm Dondra Head, then small lanes to the point.
• Tuk-tuk or scooter is easiest. Parking is limited near the lighthouse green; arrive early.
• Entry is usually from the rocks—time your jump carefully and watch a few sets first.

The south-west coast has its prime window from November bis April with cleaner mornings. Dondra is fickle and favors a solid SW pulse with light northerly winds.
