Description
Nuwara Eliya Post office built-in 1894, it is an icon of the country’s colonial past. The façade of the building is in the classic English Tudor style architecture with red brick. This landmark structure reflects the distinctive identity of ‘Little England’ in the central hills. The post office is on Queen Elizabeth Drive in the heart of Nuwara Eliya. With the release of a Rs.10 stamp by the Sri Lanka Postal Department in honor of World Postal in 1990, the image of the post office increased the awareness of visitor. This brought about an increase in the fame of the Nuwara Eliya Post Office and many started viewing it as an attraction of the city. In order to provide visitors a chance to enjoy the elegance of this historic structure, the former residence of postmaster on the upper floor of post office was transformed into tourist accommodations in 2012. Those don’t have the chance to book the accommodation can still visit the post office, which is located on the ground level, and buy the lovely postcards offered here as souvenirs.
