Matale

Matale is located in the beautiful valley at the foothills of the Wilshire Mountains in Sri Lanka. Matale’s historical significance is rooted in ancient times, tracing back to the era of Gongale Godabanda and the reign of Gajaba. Known for its valley landscape, the town’s governance during King Pandukabhaya’s reign was assigned to Girikhandasi, his uncle, marking its early importance.

Originally known as the colony of Matula, the area evolved into what is now known as Matale, enriched by legends and historical milestones. One such monumental event was the compilation of the Tripitaka between 102 and 110 AD, a significant chapter in Sri Lankan history believed to have occurred in Matale.

The town is also celebrated as the birthplace of the Hela heroes and the epicentre of the Matale Rebellion in 1848. Spearheaded by Weera Puran Appu Gongale, this uprising against British imperialism and its oppressive practices, including arbitrary taxation and economic decline, is a testament to the resilient spirit of Matale’s inhabitants. The rebellion’s legacy is commemorated through monuments dedicated to these national heroes.

The evolution of local governance in Matale saw the establishment of the Matale Local Government Council in 1888, following the introduction of local government by the British in 1865. Transforming into a District Council in 1923, it expanded its electoral constituencies, with notable leaders such as Mr. Sir William Gopallawa, Sri Lanka’s first Sinhala Buddhist governor and president, playing pivotal roles in its administration. By 1963, Matale’s urban divisions increased, marking its development into a Mahanagara Sabha.

Geographically, Matale spans 860 square hectares within the Central Province, situated at an elevation of 2147 feet. Its climate, influenced by the north-easterly monsoon, fosters the cultivation of export crops like pepper, cloves, coffee, and cocoa. The town, with a population of approximately 74,864 across 52 Grama Niladari divisions, is framed by the majestic Wilshire mountain range, standing at about 3000 feet.

Matale’s significance extends to its natural resources, particularly spatic limestone, positioning it as a critical player in limestone-related industries. The town has historical and aesthetic sites, including the Wilshire Reserve, VT Nanayakkara Park, McDowell Fort, and Sri Muttumari Amman Temple. These landmarks, along with essential public amenities like government institutions, schools, banks, parks, and markets, underline Matale’s cultural and social vitality, serving its community and preserving its rich heritage.
