More Details about this Attraction

The Natha Devalaya, situated near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, is one of the oldest surviving shrines in Sri Lanka, with its origins dating back to the 14th-century Gampola period. Dedicated to the deity Natha, regarded as a guardian of Buddhism and protector of the island, the shrine has played a central role in the spiritual and political life of the Kandyan Kingdom.

Strategically built within the royal complex, Natha Devalaya was closely linked to the coronation of Kandyan kings. Before ascending the throne, kings sought blessings at this shrine, underscoring its importance in legitimising royal power.

Archaeological remains, including stone carvings, inscriptions, and bronze statues, highlight the artistry and devotion of the era. The site also contains ancient Bodhi trees and smaller shrines, adding layers of spiritual significance.

During the Kandyan period, the devalaya was a hub of cultural and military activity, with references found in historical chronicles and royal records. It functioned not only as a religious site but also as a place where political decisions were sanctified.

Even today, annual peraheras and rituals continue to be performed, preserving the centuries-old traditions. Visitors can witness a living heritage site that blends history, culture, and devotion, making Natha Devalaya a vital landmark in the sacred city of Kandy.
