Description
Madukanda Sri Dalada Viharaya is the principal Dalada Maligaya. The sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha was housed after it was carried into Sri Lanka by Hemamala and Dantha from India. The famous Thonigala inscription is close to the temple as well.
The structure of the temple has inaugurated in the era of King Dutugemunu's General Nandimitra. This Vihara has water-cooled fabricating. There are remains of the stone columns of an old structure and the steps commencing to it, which have a fence and guard stone. Inside the image house, a ruined statue of a Buddha can be seen, and there is another exciting structure made of rectangular stone slabs thought to be a lavatory.
