Mathalagala, also known as Dewalagala Plains, is the crest of a hill rising to an elevation of 894 m (2,933 feet) above sea level. At the top, you’ll find a sprawling grass plain covering almost 15 hectares – a type of natural landscape known locally as Patana Plains. These grasslands, found in several areas of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, have a raw, untouched beauty. From time to time, you may see villagers grazing cattle here, which is another reason why going without a local guide isn’t recommended.

Navigating the correct path on your own can be tricky. That’s why experienced hikers and local villagers often guide visitors safely to the plains. For those who love camping under the stars, Mathalagala offers a peaceful and secluded spot, popular among Sri Lankan trekkers looking to escape into nature.

Hiking trails towards Mathalagala Pathana

The easiest hike to the plains is from Narangamuwa on the northern side of the Knuckles Range. From the Narangamuwa Temple or Knuckles Reach Nature Villa, the hike is only about 3 km (2 miles) but still climbs roughly 400 m (1,300 feet) in altitude. For an average hiker, it takes about 1.5 hours uphill, or just 1 hour if you’re an experienced trekker.

Another option is to start from Meemure – a village already well-known among travelers. However, this trail is much harder to find and more demanding. It’s 5 km (3 miles) long and climbs over 500 m (1,600 feet). For most hikers, it’s a 2.5-hour climb one way, or around 5 hours for the full excursion.

Whether you choose the easier Narangamuwa route or the challenging Meemure trail, reaching the Mathalagala Plains is an unforgettable experience. With sweeping views, cool breezes, and the quiet charm of the Knuckles mountains, it’s a perfect getaway for those seeking nature, adventure, and a true Sri Lankan hiking and camping experience.
