Description

Senanayake Samudraya is the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka, located in the heart of the Ampara District. Built as part of the historic Gal Oya Development Project, this vast man-made lake plays a vital role in irrigation, hydro-power generation, and agriculture, supporting thousands of farming families in the Eastern Province.

Surrounded by lush forests and open plains, Senanayake Samudraya is also a place of remarkable natural beauty. The reservoir is dotted with small islands and attracts a wide variety of wildlife, including elephants, deer, birds, and aquatic species. It forms the centerpiece of the Gal Oya National Park, making it a popular destination for nature lovers, bird watchers, and eco-tourists.

More Details about this Attraction

Senanayake Samudraya is the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka, covering an area of over 7,800 hectares, and is the heart of the famous Gal Oya Scheme. Constructed in the 1950s, the reservoir was named after D. S. Senanayake, Sri Lanka’s first Prime Minister, who played a key role in developing the country’s irrigation systems.

This massive water body feeds numerous canals that irrigate vast paddy fields across the Ampara region, making it one of the most important agricultural lifelines in the Eastern Province. Beyond its economic value, Senanayake Samudraya is a biodiversity hotspot. It lies partly within Gal Oya National Park, Sri Lanka’s only national park where boat safaris allow visitors to see wildlife—especially elephants swimming between islands, a rare and unforgettable sight.

The reservoir is home to a wide variety of bird species, including pelicans, eagles, cormorants, and herons, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Early mornings and evenings are especially beautiful, with misty waters and golden sunsets reflecting across the lake. The area offers a calm, untouched atmosphere ideal for nature exploration, photography, and peaceful retreats.
