Bak Full Moon Poya Day

Event Details

🗓 April 12, 2025

⚲ Nagadeepaya, Sri Lanka

Bak Full Moon Poya Day, observed on 12 April 2025, is an important religious and cultural holiday in Sri Lanka. It commemorates Lord Buddha’s second visit to the country, during which he travelled to Nagadeepa (in present-day Jaffna) to resolve a conflict between two Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, over a gem-studded throne. The visit symbolizes the importance of peace and reconciliation, which are key values in Buddhism.

Bak Poya also coincides with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year seasons, marking a period of renewal, harmony, and prosperity. Devotees observe religious activities such as visiting temples, observing Sil (precepts), meditating, and offering alms. Religious sermons and cultural programs further enrich the day’s significance.

Public Holiday Regulations:
Bak Poya is a national public holiday in Sri Lanka. Liquor sales and public consumption are strictly prohibited, and liquor stores, bars, and pubs remain closed. These restrictions ensure the religious sanctity of the day is preserved.

Transportation Challenges:
Transportation can be challenging as many travel for religious purposes and New Year celebrations. Public transport services may operate on limited schedules, and roads leading to religious and cultural sites may experience heavy traffic. Travellers should plan to avoid delays.

Bak Full Moon Poya Day is a time for spiritual reflection, peace, and cultural unity in Sri Lanka.
