Madin Full Moon Poya Day 2026

Madin Full Moon Poya Day

Event Details

🗓 March 3, 2026

Madin Full Moon Poya Day, observed on 3 March 2026, holds great significance in Sri Lanka’s Buddhist calendar. It commemorates the first visit of Lord Buddha to his hometown, Kapilavastu, after enlightenment. During this visit, Lord Buddha met his father, King Suddhodana, his wife, Yasodhara, and his son, Rahula. The ordination of Prince Rahula as a monk, marking the beginning of the Buddhist monastic tradition for young novices, is a key event remembered on this day.

Devotees engage in religious activities such as observing Sil (precepts), meditating, offering alms to monks, and participating in Dhamma sermons at temples. The day encourages reflection on familial responsibilities, renunciation, and spiritual growth.

Public Holiday Regulations:
As with all Poya days, Madin Poya is a public holiday in Sri Lanka. Liquor sales are strictly prohibited, and liquor stores, bars, and pubs remain closed. Purchasing or consuming alcohol in public spaces is also banned, maintaining the sacred nature of the day.

Transportation Challenges:
Public transportation services may operate on limited schedules. Additionally, routes leading to significant religious sites may experience congestion due to pilgrimages. Travellers are advised to plan accordingly to avoid delays.

Madin Poya serves as a reminder of the values of family, sacrifice, and spiritual commitment.
