In January 1977, the Hurulu Eco Park in Habarana, Sri Lanka, has designated a biosphere reserve. It has a functioning ecosystem with an affluent animal population. Ten thousand hectares make up this area. An old teak plantation that had been grassland was transformed into this park. The forest reserve is significant to the Sri Lankan elephant. The species is well known for its migratory habits, mainly during the dry season between the local forests. Several other protected areas encircle Hurulu Forest Reserve. Ritigala, Minneriya-Giritale, and Mahaweli flood basins all have nature reserves.

Ritigala mountains range is near the cities of Anuradhapura and Habarana, Sri Lanka. Ritigala is one of the three strict nature reserves in Sri Lanka and is five sq. km inland. The Minneriya National Park is found in the District of Polonnaruwa in the North Central Province. Minneriya tank, with its surroundings, plays a vital role as a wetland. Therefore it has high biodiversity. The main entrance to the Park is Ambagaswewa, 8.8km from Habarana on the Colombo - Polonnaruwa route. Kaudulla national park is the newly established national park near the city of Habarana, Sri Lanka. Kaudulla is in the country and has excellent potential for viewing elephants and other species of wildlife. Topography is varied with hills, lowlands, forest and scrubland. Kaudulla is an old irrigation tank with a capacity of 104,000 feet acres. The primary source of water is a giant canal which is around the tank.
