The Department of National Museums developed the Galle National Museum with the primary purpose of raising public awareness about the traditional cultural heritage of Southern Sri Lanka. The museum officially opened to the public on March 31, 1986.

The museum's exhibits include a diverse collection of archaeological and anthropological objects that highlight the rich cultural history of the region. Some of the notable items on display include:

Traditional Masks: The museum features a collection of traditional masks used in various rituals, which are an integral part of the cultural heritage of the region.

Ornamental Objects: Visitors can see decorative objects made from turtle shells, showcasing the artistic craftsmanship and traditions of the area.
