The Kiri Vehera in Polonnaruwa is a remarkable historical and architectural treasure of Sri Lanka. This large stupa, towering at 80 feet, is notable for being one of the best-preserved ancient structures in the region, maintaining its original condition despite the passage of over 900 years. Its design is a classic example of a Buddhist stupa, characterized by its simplicity and purity. The name "Kiri Vehera" translates to "Milk White Dagoba," a fitting description for its pristine white appearance. Historically, Kiri Vehera is believed to have been built by a queen named Subadra, the consort of King Parakramabahu (1153-1186), and was initially known as the "Rupavathi Stupa." It is the second-largest stupa in Polonnaruwa, with only Rankoth Vehera being larger. The architectural details of Kiri Vehera, such as the well-preserved cylinder above the Hathras Kotuwa, are notable for their intricacy and historical significance. This cylindrical component, Devatha Kotuwa or 'Enclosure of Deities', features pilasters dividing its surface into eight parts. It was adorned with figures of deities, although these relief sculptures are no longer visible today.
Kiri Vehera is also surrounded by many restored smaller stupas, identified as burial chambers of high priests and royals, indicating its significant role in the religious and social fabric of ancient Sri Lanka. Its origins trace back to as early as the 3rd century BC, with inscriptions from the 2nd century CE mentioning a local ruler, Mahadali Mahana raja, and referring to the stupa by the name Mangalamahaseya of the Kajaragama raji maha vehera.
