Nestled on the Dambulla–Kandy road, Menikdena is a testament to Sri Lanka's rich history. This archaeological reserve, covering 2 hectares, offers a captivating journey into the past, with roots dating back to King Kithsiri Megha (555-573 AD).

Historical Background
Budugama, as Menikdena was initially known, has a history shrouded in time. While its establishment is attributed to King Kithsiri Megha, some archaeologists speculate its origins in the 3rd to 4th century AD. The monastery served as a sanctuary for recluse arahants from its early days.
Entrance and Structures
Entering from the Menikdena Tank side, visitors are greeted by six wide granite steps flanked by guard stones and a blank moonstone. A granite pillar inscription on the right adds an air of mystery. The stupa, built on a large high platform, reveals unique features, with only one Buddha statue remaining in a reasonably good state.
The chapter house's massive stone pillars stand majestically, reflecting the architectural prowess of the past. The Arboretum, spanning 14 hectares, further enhances the site's allure.
