Unveiling the Mountain's Name and Lore

According to local lore, the mountain earned its name due to its resemblance to a 'Warangal,' or earring in the Sinhala language. Renowned for hiking opportunities, Arangala Mountain boasts three distinct peaks, with the highest soaring to an elevation of around 750 meters. It also holds historical significance as it served as a gathering point for Weera Keppetipola and Gongale Goda Banda, two heroes who led the 1818 rebellion against British rule.

Trekking the Peaks and Valleys

Arangala Mountain presents itself as an enticing challenge for those seeking an unforgettable hike, and allotting approximately three hours for the journey to the peak rewards hikers with a vista of lush forests interspersed with landmarks such as the Knuckles Mountain Range, the Bowatanne and Nalanda reservoirs, and the towns of Matale, Dambulla, and Kandy. It's worth noting that the hike can be strenuous due to strong winds, potentially leading to dehydration. Therefore, carrying an ample supply of water is strongly advised.

Navigating the Pathway to Arangala Mountain

To reach Arangala Mountain, one must venture 28 kilometres from Matale. The route entails travelling via the Kandy – Jaffna Highway and continuing through Thotagamuwa until reaching Naula, where the mountain lies in wait.

Optimal Time for an Adventure and Weather Considerations

Arangala Mountain is nestled within a preserved, dense forest, and the trail traverses a dry zone. While hiking, visitors may encounter solid winds or breezes, which could lead to dehydration. Hence, being prepared with sufficient water and staying hydrated is crucial.

Revelling in the Hike to the Peak

Embarking on the hike to the peak of Arangala Mountain is a rewarding endeavour that demands about three hours of dedication—nestled on the mountain's southern side, an intricately constructed pagoda stands, providing panoramic views of Matale, the Bowatenna reservoir, and the Nalanda reservoir. From a separate peak on Arangala, the idea expands to encompass the entirety of Matale, Dambulla, Kandy, Wiltshire, Etipola, Brandy Rock, Ambokka, the Knuckles mountain range, Reverston peak, Karagahatenna mountain peak, and numerous other landmarks.
