Moon Gallery at Galle Fort
Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, is where history comes alive. Within this formidable fortress, there's a hidden gem known as the Moon Gallery. In this writing, we'll take you on a journey through time as we explore the rich history of Galle Fort's Moon Gallery and the fascinating stories behind it. The story of the Moon Gallery begins in the 16th century when the Portuguese ruled this coastal outpost. They constructed a large tower at the heart of the fort's ramparts, facing the land side. This tower was initially known as Conceicao, reflecting the Portuguese influence in the region.
The Dutch Transformation
In the 17th century, Galle Fort transformed under Dutch rule. The Dutch not only renovated the existing structure but also significantly expanded it. It was during this time that Conceicao was renamed Moon Bastion, a name that has endured through the centuries.
Dutch Commander Adrian Van Ruthaz
In 1667, a significant event in the history of Moon Bastion occurred. The lower terraces of the bastions facing the land side were fortified and developed under the leadership of the Dutch Commander of the southern province, Adrian Van Ruthaz. This strategic move was aimed at strengthening the defences of the fort.
Moon Bastion's Impressive Arsenal
The lower terrace of Moon Bastion, following Adrian Van Ruthaz's improvements, boasted at least 20 artillery emplacements. This formidable array of weaponry was strategically placed to thwart enemy attacks from the land side. The bastion symbolised Galle Fort's military might during this period.
Galle Heritage Foundation's Restoration
Fast forward to the present day, the Galle Heritage Foundation has taken the responsibility of preserving and showcasing the historical significance of Moon Bastion. They have meticulously restored the subterranean munitions storage beneath the upper terrace of the bastion. This space has been transformed into an informative area where visitors can gain a brief overview of the site's history. It's a perfect place to immerse oneself in the past.
