History
The Pinnawala Open Zoo's inception is traced back to the visionary leadership of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga in 2000. However, due to certain governmental disputes, the construction was halted in 2002. It wasn't until 2008, under the administration of former President Mahinda Rajapakse, that the construction officially recommenced. On that momentous day, 17th April 2015, Tourism & Sports Minister Mr Navin Dissanayake and National Zoological Gardens Department Director General Anura de Silva inaugurated the zoo. The construction of this remarkable zoological paradise amounted to a staggering 862 million LKR.

With its inception as the first open-air zoo in Sri Lanka, the Pinnawala Open Zoo is a testament to the nation's commitment to providing a natural and unrestricted habitat for its native animals. The zoo is thoughtfully divided into seven enclosures, each housing a unique set of creatures.
