Pinnawala Zoo

Pinnawala Zoo is Sri Lanka’s first open-concept zoo which is presently accessible to the public. It is built with a performance of immerse shows where the animals are kept in an environment related to their habitats. The opening took residence on the 17th of April 2015.

History

The Pinnawala Open Zoo's inception is traced back to the visionary leadership of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga in 2000. However, due to certain governmental disputes, the construction was halted in 2002. It wasn't until 2008, under the administration of former President Mahinda Rajapakse, that the construction officially recommenced. On that momentous day, 17th April 2015, Tourism & Sports Minister Mr Navin Dissanayake and National Zoological Gardens Department Director General Anura de Silva inaugurated the zoo. The construction of this remarkable zoological paradise amounted to a staggering 862 million LKR.

Zoo

With its inception as the first open-air zoo in Sri Lanka, the Pinnawala Open Zoo is a testament to the nation's commitment to providing a natural and unrestricted habitat for its native animals. The zoo is thoughtfully divided into seven enclosures, each housing a unique set of creatures. While the monkey island, Bird aviary, Amphibian area, and Pet Area 2 are still under construction, the existing enclosures beckon visitors to delve into the world of Sri Lankan wildlife.

Swan Pond

Animals

The Pinnawala Open Zoo showcases a diverse array of animals from Sri Lanka and worldwide. In the Sri Lankan zone, visitors can encounter native species such as the chital, lion, Purple-faced leaf monkey, Wild boar, Sambar, Asian elephant, and numerous endemic bird species. The World Zone introduces visitors to a global wildlife experience, allowing them to marvel at species from around the globe.

  • Children (3 - 12 Years): LKR 100.00
  • Children (School/Nursery Group): LKR 50.00

Overseas Visitors

  • Adult: US$ 15.00
  • Children (3 - 12 Years): US$ 7.50

SAARC Visitors

  • Adult: US$ 10.00
  • Children (3 - 12 Years): US$ 5.00

Visiting Information

The Pinnawala Open Zoo operates daily from 8.30 hrs to 17.30 hrs, providing ample time to explore its various enclosures and observe the fascinating wildlife. Visitors are advised to allocate at least three to four hours for a comprehensive experience.
