The park occupies the Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa road and Mahiyangana-Padiyathalawa road in Ampara Buddulla and Polonnaruwa and crosses the border within Eastern and Uva provinces, Sri Lanka.
The easiest route from Colombo is via Kurunegala, Habarana, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Manamitiya. It is around 265km from Colombo.
Degeneration of the pre-Cambrian rock has formed a mature mantle and undulating peneplain, broken by several prominent remnants of erosion (rock lands and ridges). The topographic feature is the 8km long area of the Rocky Mountains in the park's southwest. The location of the park is 58,7850ha. The park was increased in the east from its original size of 51,468ha on 16 th September 1985.to provide different habitats for wildlife and ensure the protection of the important catchments of the NDK reservoir. Condition is mainly inspired by the northeast monsoon, or Maha, which lasts from October to late January.
