Sri Lanka Visa Guide

Sri Lanka, often called the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean,” welcomes millions of travelers each year for its beaches, wildlife, history, and culture. To make travel easier, the Sri Lankan government operates an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system as well as short-term visa schemes for eligible visitors. This guide provides a clear overview of how to enter Sri Lanka legally and smoothly, whether you are visiting for a holiday, a short business trip, or simply transiting through.

In the following sections, you will find details about visa types, including tourist, business, transit, and diplomatic categories. We also explain the ETA process — how to apply online, how long it takes, and how to check your application status. For travelers from selected countries, we highlight the free visa-on-arrival scheme that is offered to boost tourism. You will also learn about visa fees, possible extensions for longer stays, and the official points of application both online and on arrival.

This Visa Guide is designed as a simple reference for travelers planning a visit to Sri Lanka. It does not replace official advice, and requirements may change without notice. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, always refer to the Department of Immigration & Emigration or the official ETA portal.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Information

Overview of ETA

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is an official online travel permit issued by the Department of Immigration & Emigration of Sri Lanka. It is mandatory for most foreign visitors, except those exempted by special visa schemes. The ETA system allows travelers to apply and receive travel authorization online before arrival, avoiding delays at the airport.

Types of ETA

ETA is issued only for short visits to Sri Lanka for the purposes of Tourism, Business, or Transit. Each category has specific validity and conditions based on the nature of travel.

Application Website

All ETA applications must be submitted through the official portal at www.eta.gov.lk. The site provides instructions, payment facilities, and status tracking.

Submitting an Application

Applications can be completed entirely online. Travelers do not need a confirmed air ticket to submit an ETA application. Once details are entered and the processing fee is paid, the ETA is usually approved within 24 hours.

Checking ETA Status

Approved ETAs can be verified at any time through the official status check portal. Travelers must provide their ETA reference number. A 24/7 ETA hotline is also available at +94 71 99 67 888.

Payment and Security

The ETA processing fee is paid online via a secure international payment gateway. Accepted cards include Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. Payments are processed in line with international security standards. Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, even if the application is not approved.

Validity of ETA

An ETA is valid for six months from the date of issue. A new ETA cannot be applied for using the same passport until the existing one expires. If a passport containing a valid ETA is lost, a new application may be submitted by paying the fee again. A fresh ETA cannot be obtained while staying inside Sri Lanka.

Existing Visas and ETA

Travelers who already hold a valid Residence Visa or Multiple Entry Visa cannot apply for a fresh ETA until the current visa expires or is cancelled. For official or diplomatic visits, separate arrangements apply under bilateral agreements.

Corrections and Errors

Once an ETA application is submitted and paid, details cannot be changed and the fee is non-refundable. If incorrect information is entered, a new application must be submitted with the correct details and the relevant fee paid again. Always review your information carefully before confirming.

Privacy and Data Protection

The ETA system follows strict privacy standards. Only the information required to process the application is collected, and all data is stored securely on government servers. Personal details will not be shared beyond the processing of the ETA.

Reminder: An ETA is an official travel requirement for most visitors. Always apply through the official government website to ensure your application is valid and secure.

Sri Lanka Visa – Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about Sri Lanka ETA, visa on arrival, fees, extensions, and entry rules.

What is a gratis visa in Sri Lanka?
A gratis visa is issued without a fee. Certain categories (e.g., diplomats or travelers under special government programs) may qualify when such policies are in place.
Is there a visa fee for Sri Lanka?
Usually yes. Most travelers pay a fee when applying for the Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). Fees vary by nationality and visa type; always check the official ETA site or your nearest Sri Lankan mission for current charges.
Are visas to Sri Lanka free?
Not normally. Occasionally Sri Lanka offers limited-time free visa or visa-on-arrival programs for selected countries to boost tourism. Outside these periods, regular ETA/visa fees apply.
Can I get a Sri Lanka visa on arrival?
Sometimes, depending on your nationality and current policy. However, it’s strongly recommended to obtain your ETA online before you travel to avoid airport delays.
Can you travel to Sri Lanka without a visa?
Most nationalities require an ETA/visa. A few are exempt under bilateral agreements or special arrangements. Always verify requirements before you book flights.
Is ETA mandatory for Sri Lanka?
For most short-term visitors (tourism/business/transit), yes—ETA pre-approval is required prior to arrival unless you’re from an exempt country.
Which countries need a visa to Sri Lanka?
Almost all countries need either an ETA or a visa. A small number are exempt (e.g., some SAARC nations under specific arrangements). Check official guidance for your passport.
Where do I get a Sri Lanka visa?
Apply online for an ETA via the official portal, or apply through a Sri Lankan Embassy/Consulate if you need a different visa category (e.g., work, residence).
Where do I get the Sri Lanka e-visa (ETA)?
Through the official ETA website of Sri Lanka. Avoid third-party sites to prevent extra fees and delays.
Do you need a photo for a Sri Lanka visa?
For the online ETA application, a photo upload is typically not required. Embassy/consular visa applications may require passport-size photos—check their instructions.
How far in advance should you apply for a Sri Lanka visa?
Apply at least 1–2 weeks before travel. Many ETA approvals arrive sooner, but applying early gives you time to fix issues if anything is flagged.

Fees depend on nationality and visa type and can change. Confirm current pricing on the official ETA site or with the nearest Sri Lankan mission before you apply.
What does ETA stand for in visas?
ETA = Electronic Travel Authorization. It’s a digital pre-approval to enter Sri Lanka for short visits (tourism/business/transit).
Is ETA better than visa on arrival?
Generally yes. An ETA approved before you fly means faster airport processing and fewer queues. Visa-on-arrival can be slower and is not guaranteed for all nationalities at all times.
Who does not need an ETA?
A small group of nationalities are ETA-exempt under specific agreements (e.g., Singapore, Maldives, Seychelles at the time of writing). Always verify current policy for your passport before travel.
Can an ETA be rejected?
Yes. Rejections can occur due to incorrect details, past immigration violations, security concerns, or ineligibility. Apply carefully via the official site and ensure your passport data matches exactly.

Use the official ETA portal, enter accurate data, keep a passport valid for 6+ months, avoid overstays, and have proof of funds and onward travel if requested by immigration.

Complete the form on the official ETA site, pay the fee online, and wait for email approval. Carry your passport and the ETA confirmation when you travel.
How quickly can I get an ETA?
Many approvals arrive within 24–48 hours, but processing time can vary. Apply early to be safe, especially in peak seasons or during policy changes.
What do you need to enter Sri Lanka?
A valid passport (6+ months remaining), an approved ETA/visa, proof of onward/return travel, and sufficient funds. Additional documents may be requested at immigration.
Can you extend a tourist visa in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Tourist stays can usually be extended (e.g., up to 6 months in total) at the Department of Immigration in Colombo, subject to eligibility and fee payment.
How long is the ETA valid?
Typically valid for 6 months from issue, allowing entry for up to 30 days initially (often extendable). Always confirm the validity shown on your approval email.
Can I work in Sri Lanka on a tourist ETA?
No. Paid work requires the appropriate employment/residence visa. A tourist ETA is for tourism or short business visits only (non-remunerated).
Do children need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Yes. Each child (including infants) needs their own ETA/visa unless specifically exempt. Ensure their passport has sufficient validity as well.
Does one ETA allow multiple entries?
Tourist ETAs typically allow double entry within the initial stay period. For more entries or longer stays, apply for the appropriate visa category.
What happens if I overstay my visa?
Overstays may lead to fines, delays at departure, or future entry issues. Always extend legally before your permission to stay expires.
Can I apply at the airport instead of online?
Some nationalities may obtain visas on arrival, but this is not universal and can change. Applying online for an ETA before travel is the safest option to avoid queues or refusals at the border.
Do I need a return/onward ticket?
Yes, immigration may require proof of onward or return travel and sufficient funds for your stay. Keep confirmations handy (print or digital).
Is an ETA the same as an e-visa?
In Sri Lanka, “ETA” functions as the electronic visa pre-approval for short visits. You’ll receive confirmation by email and your passport is verified on arrival.
How do I check my ETA status?
You can verify ETA status using your reference number and passport details on the official ETA portal.
