Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration introduced a new eVisa system on April 17, 2024, replacing the previous Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) website for short-term visa applications. The new eVisa portal, accessible at www.srilankaevisa.lk, promises an efficient application process for travellers.
Key Highlights of the New eVisa System:
- Website Transition: The traditional ETA system has been phased out in favour of the new eVisa platform.
- Fee Waiver Scheme: A fee waiver is available for tourists from China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan. This waiver is applicable for the 30-day single-entry eVisa until May 31, 2024.
- Eligibility: All travellers entering by air or sea for tourism, business, or transit purposes can apply, except for certain nationalities, such as those from Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Syria, and North Korea, who must apply through an embassy.
- Required Documents: Applicants need a police clearance, a certificate from a Sri Lankan guarantor, and accommodation details, among other documents.
- Exceptional Cases: Taiwanese nationals should select “People’s Republic of China (Special Administrative Region of China)” as their nationality, and Kosovo nationals are eligible for a Visa On Arrival.
- Visa Exemptions: Thanks to reciprocity agreements, citizens of Singapore, Maldives, Seychelles, and the Czech Republic do not need a standard 6-month eVisa.
- Transit Waiver: All nationalities can enjoy a 2-day eVisa waiver through Sri Lankan airports.
Applying for a Sri Lanka visa:
- Access the Portal: Go to the official Sri Lanka eVisa website.
- Account Setup: Create an account or log in to an existing one.
- Application Form: Complete the application form with accurate details.
- Document Upload: Upload necessary documents like a passport scan and recent photograph.
- Payment: Pay the eVisa fee online securely.
- Application Tracking: Use the provided reference number to track your application status.
- eVisa Download: Upon approval, download and print the eVisa for entry.
This new eVisa system aims to streamline the application process, making it more accessible and efficient for international travellers visiting Sri Lanka.
Updated eVisa Fee Structure:
- Service Fee: An additional USD 18.50 service fee will be charged for all visa categories. This fee is separate from payment gateway charges, taxes, and other transaction fees.
Assistance for Transaction Issues:
- Reporting Issues: If you encounter any suspended or unsuccessful transactions during your application process, you should immediately contact the Help Desk.
- Handling Unsuccessful Transactions: Only create a new application or make a new payment if instructed explicitly by the Help Desk team. They will guide you in proceeding with your application to avoid duplications and additional charges.
These updates ensure that all applicants know the extra costs and have clear instructions on addressing any issues during the application process, promoting a smoother and more transparent experience when applying for a Sri Lanka eVisa.
