Ferry service between India and Sri Lanka begins

In a momentous leap towards fostering historical maritime ties, India and Sri Lanka have rekindled a cherished connection by launching an eagerly awaited passenger ferry service. This initiative begins a new era of accessibility and exchange between the two nations.

Setting Sail Once More

The resumption of an international, high-speed passenger ferry service connecting Nagapattinam on Tamil Nadu’s eastern coast and Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka’s northern province is a milestone that holds profound historical significance. After nearly four decades of dormancy, this remarkable voyage recommenced on October 14, 2023.

A Symbol of Bilateral Unity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi aptly described this event as a new chapter in the diplomatic and economic ties between India and Sri Lanka. He emphasized that the passenger ferry service would be pivotal in strengthening the cultural, commercial, and civilizational bonds between the two nations. It resonates with the core theme of the India-Sri Lanka economic partnership, emphasizing connectivity. Additionally, PM Modi revealed India’s intentions to restore the ferry service operation between Rameswaram and Talaimannar.

Accessible and Efficient Travel

The Shipping Corporation of India has joined forces with a private agency to streamline ticketing. The vessel, designed for optimal passenger comfort, can accommodate up to 150 travellers on board. Commencing its journey at 7 a.m. from Nagapattinam, it reaches Kankesanthurai at 11 a.m. The return journey embarks at 1.30 p.m. from Kankesanthurai, arriving back in Nagapattinam at 5.30 p.m. Offering convenience and efficiency, a one-way ticket for this journey is priced at approximately ₹7,670 (LKR 29899) per passenger, with an allowance of up to 50 kg of baggage.
