Sri Lanka’s 10 most Spectacular Waterfalls

There are many significant waterfalls throughout Sri Lanka, but the most spectacular drops transpire along the Hill country. Although their high-volume flows from wet mountain ranges have chiselled deep ravines, appearing in numerous majestic cascades.

1. Diyaluma WaterFall

Diyaluma WaterFall is Located close to Koslanda, Haputale; one can see the incredible Diyaluma waterfalls cascading like a sheet of paper along the mountain. This being the 2nd highest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, measuring up to 220ms in height, is easily missed by most. Unlike most of the other waterfalls you will see as you drive along with the hill country of Sri Lanka, this is still a little gem that many tourists do not frequent. However, one can be very adventurous and try to ascend to the top from the bottom of the mountain, requiring some fitness and a few risks. Our expert guide will take you along a very remote part of the island through tea plantations to a small village to get to the start of the waterfalls. You can reach a 2-3 hour trek to get to the top of the Diyaluama waterfalls. This walk is one of the various scenic and unique experiences and few hill country elephants still roaming. 2. Aberdeen Waterfall

The Aberdeen Waterfall remains one of the most iconic waterfalls in the Nuwara Eliya district! Reaching the cascade involves a reasonably challenging hike that will take you down a winding pathway composed of narrow staircases and paths laid in concrete. The walk will take you through lush undergrowth, which is usually darkened by the thick canopy – the hike is so scenic that many would find it very therapeutic. During the journey, one could listen to the sweet melodies of songbirds, the slow buzzing sound of the insects, and witness such creatures. There are unique plants, and you will also walk past several creeks, large boulders, and vines. At the end of the trail lies the waterfall –magnificent, epic, and stunning, all the elaborate words fail to describe its beauty – It is a site that must be visited to understand and appreciate its splendour!

3. Bambarakanda waterfall

 

Bambarakanda waterfall is the highest cascade in Sri Lanka, with a sheer drop of 263 meters. In the world ranking its 299th tallest cascade in the world. The fall occupies the Badulla District between an evergreen forest in the Kalupahana Haputale.

4. Dunhinda waterfall

The 63m high Dunhinda Fall is undoubtedly one of the most glorious waterfalls in Sri Lanka. The beauty of the fall and the surrounding nature has made it one of the highest-ranked tourist attraction places in the country. Dunhinda Falls has located about 5km to the north of Badulla City and originated from the adult Oya. The name “Dunhinda” in Sinhala refers to smoke as it produces a cloud of smoke when the water cascades into a large pool on the ground.

5. Baker's waterfall

Baker's waterfall is located on the Horton Plains national park; this fall is accessible from Pattipola or Ohiya town. From Pattipola, take the well-signed footpath and either follow it to World's End and loop back to Baker's Falls or take the right turn at the start of the path straight there. Shortly before the fall, a steep, root-strewn bank can be challenging to negotiate, especially in wet weather.

6. Laxapana waterfall

The Laxapana Falls holds a grand 126 metres in height. This would make it the country’s eighth tallest waterfall, only surpassed by behemoths like Dunhinda and Babarakanda Falls. It is located in Nuwara Eliya – in the Maskeliya area, right next to a small village called Kiriwan Eliya, to be exact. The Laxapana Falls is formed by the Maskeliya Oya, right around the extent that it forms up with the Kehelgamu Oya to form the famous Kelani River. AS of right now, the waterfall gives its name to the Laxapana Hydro-Electric Stations, which are found close to each other. These are significant sources of power for the whole country.

7. Rawana waterfall

Rawana waterfall is one of the beautiful waterfalls in the Hill Country of Sri Lanka. It belongs to the Ella area. Rawana Falls has got a very leading tourist attraction as you can recognise.
Kirindi Oya is the origin of Rawana Falls. Rawana Falls is found at an elevation of 3445 feet above sea level. The waterfall is 82 feet (25 meters) high. This magnificent waterfall, covered with oval and concave rocks, is a segment of the Rawana Falls Wildlife Reserve.

8. Gartmore waterfall

Gartmore waterfall is generally known as Sri Pada waterfall or Adam's Peak fall due to its closeness to Adam's Peak. However, because this waterfall occupies the Gartmore estate, it is also recognised by Gartmore Falls.
Gartmore Falls immediately befalls onto the Maskeliya Reservoir and is fed by two rivers that join over the falls. Each of these waters creates a waterfall before joining and lies inside the Gartmore Estate. Hence, these two waterfalls are commonly called Gartmore Estate Waterfalls.

9. St. Clair's waterfall

St. Clair's Falls is one of those widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and is usually known as the "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka".

The falls are located 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) west of the town of Talawakele on the Hatton-Talawakele Highway in Nuwara Eliya District.

10. Kirindi Ella waterfall

Kirindi Ella waterfall is in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, only 6.5 km from the main junction in Pelmadulla, Colombo-Ratnapura-Batticaloa A4 main road. Kirindi Falls in the Ratnapura District of Sabaragamuwa Province is 19 km east of Ratnapura, 25 km west of Balangoda and 55 km north of Embilipitiya.
The rise of Kirindi Ella waterfall is 116 metres. The cascades into a deep pool, which is called Diyagathwala. People stories have it that a rock stairway guides to the bottom of the pool, where a treasure trove is mysterious.
